Acquired Brain Impairment and the Koori community

A large number of Kooris who have Acquired Brain Impairment may do so because of alcohol and drug abuse. This doesn't mean that all Kooris drink and use drugs, but we know that both alcohol and drug use, are major health issues for our people today.

Not a lot is known about Acquired Brain Impairment and how it affects our community. So this information has been put together to give Kooris information about Acquired Brain Impairment, and, in particular, Alcohol Related Brain Impairment. It also provides information about how some drugs affect the brain.

The information on this website focuses mainly on the kinds of problems people with a mild to moderate cognitive impairment experience.
This includes the problems associated with thinking and memory. These problems are often not recognised or understood by the people who experience them, or by those around them. This information will enable us to give these people support, and the kinds of services they need at an earlier stage, before they become too hard to deal with.

This information will help Kooris to understand this disability so that we can deal with it in our own way.
