How many years does it take for use of alcohol and other substances to lead to brain impairment?

Many factors contribute to how alcohol and other substances cause brain impairment, including the type of drug, the amount which is used, and the general health of the person. In our experience 10 years of regular use of alcohol and other illicit substances is commensurate with significant risks for developing some brain impairment.
