Alcohol related brain impairment (ARBI) is a term used to describe the physical injury to the brain sustained as a result of alcohol consumption. Having ARBI is not the same as having an intellectual disability, nor is it the same as having dementia.

ARBI is best diagnosed by comprehensive neurological and neuropsychological assessment. A neurological assessment will examine your nervous system and, in particular, test your balance and coordination, reflexes and senses. A neuropsychological assessment (a range of tests and puzzles) will sensitively detect impairment to various parts of the brain.
